The place
Claire de Fraiteur, founder of Janvier Plants & Design, during an installation in Lisbon
Janvier Plants & Design started as a bet on a city Claire de Fraiteur had always loved. She left Paris, spent time in Melbourne learning landscape architecture from the ground up, and landed in Lisbon with a practice built around a single conviction: that plants belong in the spaces where people actually live. Gardens, terraces, balconies, apartments. The studio works primarily in residential settings, taking on each project as a dialogue with the client rather than an imposition of style.
The work is precise without being cold. Vegetation softening concrete edges, greenery reclaiming balconies, installations that make a space feel inhabited rather than decorated. Janvier has been building its presence in Lisbon since 2021, and the scale of the projects has grown steadily since.
The work
Volet began working with Janvier in April 2026. The brief covers two things: documenting ongoing and finished installations and shooting portraits of the team. Both matter equally. The installations need to be photographed in a way that shows the design without flattening it, that captures how a space actually feels once the plants are in. The portraits put faces to the studio and the people behind the work.
Two shoots completed so far. A balcony installation in a house in Lapa, another in an apartment in Anjos. Different scales, different contexts, the same attention to how light moves through planted space. The collaboration is ongoing, with more installations to document as the studio's project list grows.
